Two 2024 storms that still show up on Omaha roofs
April 26, 2024 — hail and the Elkhorn tornado. An EF-4 tornado with peak winds near 170 mph tracked from western Douglas County through Elkhorn and Bennington and south of Blair. The same storms dropped measured 2-inch hail in Papillion and 1.75-inch hail near Carter Lake and northeast Omaha.
July 31, 2024 — the wind storm. Measured gusts hit 90 mph at Eppley Airfield, 80 mph southwest of Papillion, 77 mph east of Elkhorn, and 75 mph west of Millard. OPPD called it the largest outage in its history — about 221,000 customers — with power fully restored August 8.
Wind-lifted or creased shingles and hail bruising don't always leak right away. If your home was in the path of either storm and nobody has been on the roof since, it's worth a look — and we'll say so plainly if a claim doesn't make sense after your deductible.
